Historical note

The Department of Student Support Services was established in 1970 when instructional programs for students with special needs and student support programs were consolidated under an Associate Superintendent for Special Services. The department was reorganized in 1976 pursuant to the regulations of Chapter 766 which mandated services to children with special needs. The Department of Student Support Services provided effective programs and services for Boston's students ages 3-21 who were found to have special needs.
